Expenses, grants, and financial aid
Rutgers students pay "full tuition" for twelve credits and do not incur additional tuition for heavier course schedules. Many undergraduates use this policy to their advantage and enroll in an International Studies course as a fifth or even a sixth course--paying, in effect, no additional tuition for the course. The program attempts to reduce travel costs through economies of scale, encouraging alumni and family members to accompany students for the travel portion of the course.
Travel costs are construed as educational expenses, so student loans are available in most cases. Once students are formally enrolled they may apply for assistance through the Office of Financial Aid. By the end of the Fall term, itemized expenses for each study tour are posted on this site for this purpose. See the course description under Current Study Tours.
Finally, the International Studies program has a small budget that it disburses in mini-grants of a few hundred dollars to a number of students who are enrolled for credit. Also, beginning in 2007-08, the dean's office will fund the Stainrook grants, available to students who entered as first-years in the Fall of 2006 and achieved a certain grade point average by the beginning of the Fall of 2007.
