About the Program

Here are three examples of recent International Studies courses:

  • A member of the Department of Urban Studies taught a course called "Community Resources and the Search for Social Peace in Northern Ireland." During the first eight weeks of the term, classes focused on the structure of Northern Irish society and on the segregated patterns of many of its communities. During Spring break, students visited with community organizations in Northern Ireland and heard from university lectures and civic leaders.
  • A faculty member in Mathematics has offered a fourteen-week course on Mathematics in Ancient Greece. During Spring break, a group of students from the course joined him on a ten-day study tour which included visits to major archaeological sites like the Acropolis in Athens, Plato's Academy, Olympus, and the palace of Knossos on the island of Crete.
  • Faculty members from the Departments of English and Theater Arts have conducted a series of afternoon seminars, a "mini-course," in preparation for a trip to London to study the British theatre and its major playwrights. The study tour, in May, included visits to plays, workshops, and seminars.
