Legal liability
Prospective instructors sometimes wonder what legal liability they may incur in arranging study tours for students and in traveling with them for a week or so in a foreign country. According to the Office of Risk Management in New Brunswick, faculty members conducting university business in good faith are protected by university insurance, provided they act responsibly in the course of their duties, duties that would include leading study tours. In the highly unlikely event that legal representation became necessary, the university would provide it.
In case of emergencies, medical or otherwise, faculty members are encouraged to register with SOS International, an assistance program automatically available to Rutgers employees on university business abroad. Students are urged to purchase Health Select Overseas Insurance, which provides $100,000 in short-term medical insurance for $28.
