Medical problems and emergencies

The program no longer requires a physician's form asking for details of students' physical and mental health. The emphasis is on preparation for the stress of travel, for special conditions in specific countries, and for the implications of traveling with certain medical conditions. The Office of Student Health is happy to schedule appointments for students with individual concerns. Also, its staff has volunteered to make in-class presentations on travel and good health: contract Dr. Patricia Prior, pprior@camden.rutgers.edu. Such visits should take place early in term in case immunizations are advised. General advice and information about specific destinations are available at www.cdc.gov under Travelers' Health.

Students are urged to inform their instructors of any significant medical conditions. Some instructors, in fact, may require students to complete an Informed Consent with space for information of this kind. All Rutgers students are required to complete the Medical Insurance Waiver.

Many cases of illness occur when students discontinue a regular course of medication or when their patterns of sleep or diet are disrupted. While all our participants, with rare exceptions, are legally responsible for themselves, trip leaders should be prepared to act decisively in case of injury (rare) or illness (less rare), whether doing so requires sending them home or arranging local medical care with the help of the travel agency or Rutgers International Emergency Assistance.
